They already had him basically guilty of manslaughter, they didn't need to add rape on top of everything else. ![]() Cratchit in fact tells him this, but it felt like kind of a cop out that could have been avoided if they'd just dropped that subplot. The movie keeps a fast pace as it only runs for 69 minutes, making it one of the shortest feature live-action versions of A Christmas Carol. So the idea is that, like, Scrooge is extremely fucked up because of these formative experiences, and after being visited by the ghosts he of course earnestly regrets what he did, but I just didn't really feel like they did a good enough job of redeeming him. It ties in with one of the Christmas Past flashbacks where it's revealed that not only did Scrooge have to stay at school during the holidays (like most versions establish), but the headmaster would rape him while no one was around, and Scrooge's father is aware of this but doesn't do anything about it because the headmaster is giving them a tuition discount. Cratchit secretly goes to Scrooge to ask for the money and he decides to take the opportunity to test how far a good person is willing to bend their morals just for some money. The film version I have always watched is the 1951 adaptation starring Alastair Sim, largely because a) I consider it the finest version ever made and b). Originally, a 'Christmas carol' referred to a piece of vocal music in carol form whose lyrics centre on the theme of Christmas or the Christmas season. ![]() There's a subplot where the Cratchits need money for Tiny Tim's medical treatment and Mrs. This list of Christmas carols is organized by country, language or culture of origin. It was very, very good, but also very, very dark. Anyway it's the Guy Pearce version if you want to look it up. It aired on FX in the US but I guess it was originally made by the BBC.
